Legal Information Ontario

Legal Information Ontario, a non-profit organization, offers legal information (not legal advice or other legal services) free of charge. To access this service email info@LegalLine.ca or link to http://www.LegalLine.ca.

Aritists' Legal Advice Services

Artists' Legal Advice Services (ALAS) offers a free-of-charge summary legal advice clinic in Toronto to artists of any discipline and who qualify for Legal Aid. The advice is in person, by appointment, in consultations that last up to one-half hour. Appointments with ALAS may be booked by telephone through 416-367-2527. The office is open on Tuesday and Thursday. Although the service is free-of-charge, clients are encouraged to make a contribution of $7.00 per appointment to offset the administrative costs of the service.

Lawyer Referral Service

The Law Society of Upper Canada established the Lawyer Referral Service in 1969. The service is available in both English and French. The Lawyer Referral Service will provide you with the name and telephone number of a lawyer who has signed on with the Lawyer Referral Service in the client's geographic area and field of law. Once contacted by the client, the lawyer provides a half-hour initial consultation free-of-charge. What, if any, legal services the lawyer is to provide to the client beyond the half-hour consultation is a matter for the client and the lawyer to work out between themselves. Volunteer Lawyers Service

The Volunteer Lawyers Service was created in 1994, is funded by the Law Foundation of Ontario and is sponsored by the Canadian Bar Association - Ontario, the Law Society of Upper Canada, Pro Bono Students Canada, United Way offices and Volunteer Centres across the province. Among the services it offers are free-of-charge legal services to charitable and not-for-profit community organizations. Organizations applying for legal services must:

    • Not have more than 10 full-time employees.
    • Have gross assets not exceeding $2,000,000.
    • Be unable to pay for legal advice excluding acceptable disbursements.
    • Have gross annual revenues plus operating reserves (excluding amounts for designated projects) not exceeding $1,000,000 and
    • Fill out an application form that can be found by linking to http://www.volunteerlawyers.org/gethelp/
